Discover Äkäslompolo
Finnish Lapland, which consists of about 90% forest, is well worth a visit all year round, since it retains its beauty nonstop. Äkäslompolo is located in the middle of the National Park Pallas Yllästunturi with an area of 1020 km2, and is surrounded by "The 7 Fells".
The center of the village is just a 5-minute walk. Here you will find a large supermarket, a pharmacy, a few souvenir shops, a sports shop, a bar and several restaurants.
Mount Ylläs is less than a 5-minute drive from the village. In winter, this highest mountain in Lapland has several ski lifts with over 50 slopes. Äkäslompolo is 50 km (45 min by car/taxi) from Kittilä Airport.
Winter
The long Lapland winter begins from October. The temperature slowly drops below freezing point and the first snow falls. These wonderfully cold winters are ideal for all kinds of winter activities, such as various snowmobile tours, skiing, cross-country skiing and husky and reindeer safaris.
Autumn
September is all about autumn. This so-called 'Ruska' period is very popular with hikers and cyclists. Berries and mushrooms are picked and reindeer shuffle through the woods, looking for all kinds of treats. Beautiful autumn colors and stunning sunrises and sunsets can be seen. The first Northern Lights are also often seen in September.
Summer
The short but wonderful summers have a lot to offer. The days are long and the temperature pleasant. The reindeer visit the village daily. You never have to be bored in Äkäslompolo. Fishing, hiking, cycling, canoeing, swimming and quad biking are all popular activities in this season.
